2013 NFL Draft Recap: Carolina Panthers
Round 1, Pick 14 (14): Star Lotulelei/DT/Utah. Star Impact: ✪✪✪✪
Wide-bodied agile space eater with burst who disrupts the backfield with his speed and athleticism. Can line up in multiple positions on the defensive line. Excels in disengaging and shedding blockers en route to making the tackle. Began his career at Snow Junior College until he could get his grades up, sat out a year because he questioned his passion for the game. Regained enthusiasm; lost over 40 pounds and went on to have a dominant career at Utah. Heart condition prevented him form working out at combine. Married with two daughters.
Round 2, Pick 12 (44): Kawann Short/DT/Purdue. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
Dual capability in pass-rush as speed/strength force, with experience playing in multiple fronts. Two-time team captain. Was one of the most dominant performers throughout Senior Bowl week. Has been dubbed boom or bust prospect due to reputation for taking plays off. If effort is there and he maintains his weight, he has the upside to become a greater pro than Lotulelei. Should be an exceptional rotational compliment along with Dwan Edwards in the interim.
Round 4, Pick 11 (108): Edmund Kugbila/OG/Valdosta State. Star Impact: ✪✪½
Big, athletic pile-pusher who started three seasons at tackle and guard. Extremely agile for his size, weighed 400 pounds as a freshman. Still raw, needs to get stronger. Native of Ghana, grew up playing soccer and had dreams of playing rugby. Received heavy interest from SEC schools but low SAT scores forced him to DII level. First player drafted from Valdosta State since 1997 (Artie Ulmer). Will provide much-needed depth as backup at both guard positions and has potential to compete as starter down the road.
Round 5, Pick 15 (148): A.J. Klein/ILB/Iowa State. Star Impact: ✪✪✪½
Smart, hard-nosed who batters ball-carriers with the kind of hits players feel the next morning. Possesses impressive measureables and natural instincts, as evidenced by his four interception returns for a touchdown during his career. Will provide immediate boost on the depth chart as a backup at all three linebacker spots and will be able to fill-in as starter on the drop of a dime. Jon Beason is entering the final year of his contract so this pick also adds options.
Round 6, Pick 14 (182): Kenjon Barner/RB/Oregon. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
Scat back who carried the workload for Chip Kelly this past season, amassing over 2,000 total yards and averaged six yards per carry for his career. Due to his small size, will be used as a gadget and gadget type player, who will most likely see limited touches but is capable of taking it the distance any time the ball is in his hands. Looks to cut it to the outside on any chance he gets and has had fumbling issues. Average hands, liability in pass protection but slippery in space and can serve as a return weapon. Will serve as a complimentary change of pace back.
UDFA Watch (O): Trey Diller/WR/Sam Houston State. Lined up inside/outside, kick returner.
UDFA Watch (D): Wes Horton/DE/USC. Four-year starter. Son of American Gladiator Gemini.
Overall Impact Factor: 3★
