2013 NFL Draft Recap: Kansas City Chiefs
Round 1, Pick 1 (1) Eric Fisher/OT/Central Michigan. Star Impact: ✪✪✪✪
Will start at right tackle after starring at left tackle for the Chippewas. Pairs with Branden Albert to provide the franchise with a dominant pair of bookends to protect new starting quarterback Alex Smith. This selection gives the Chiefs one of the better offensive lines in the league, as the team resigned Brandon Albert and still have a great group of interior players like Jon Asamoah and Rodney Hudson.
Round 3, Pick 1 (63) Travis Kelce/TE/Cincinnati. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
Intriguing combo tight end who is a capable blocker and a receiving threat up the seam, as well as on underneath routes. Off-field issues are concern, as he has had problems that include missing all of the 2010 season after violating team rules. He’s a unique developmental prospect that started his career off as a wildcat quarterback but will be in an uphill battle for playing time in year one behind Tony Moeaki and Anthony Fasano.
Round 3, Pick 34 (96) (Compensatory) Knile Davis/RB/Arkansas. Star Impact: ✪✪
Over-drafted based on size/speed measureables. Risk/reward pick. Inconsistent. Tested through the roof at combine but has trouble staying on the field. Sat out all of 2011 due to injury, more lingering injuries this past season. Will compete with second year backs Shaun Draughn and Cyrus Gray for the rights to be Jamaal Charles’ backup.
Round 4, Pick 2 (99) Nico Johnson/ILB/Alabama. Star Impact: ✪✪1⁄2
Underwent surgery for hernia after the Senior Bowl but returned to put in a good pro day workout at Tuscaloosa. Should compete for a starting job. Liability in pass coverage—was substituted out of games on third downs.
Round 5, Pick 1 (134) Sanders Commings/CB/Georgia. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
Physical cornerback who is being viewed as a free safety by head coach Andy Reid. Was suspended two games in 2012 for pleading guilty to battery against his girlfriend and disorderly conduct, so off-field concerns are present. Should get on the field immediately in sub-packages as a physical nickel corner with his size and strength...if he can stay out of trouble.
Round 6, Pick 2 (170) Eric Kush/C/California (PA). Star Impact: ✪✪1⁄2
Played left tackle in a similar style of offense in college but projects as a center for the Chiefs. Athleticism and versatility could serve him well as a backup at multiple positions but ultimately he gives the Chiefs another option at the pivot after losing starting center Rodney Hudson to a season ending knee injury last year.
Round 6, Pick 36 (204) (Compensatory) Braden Wilson/FB/Kansas St. Star Impact: ✪
Hometown Kansas kid specializes as a barreling lead blocker. Will have to battle long odds to make roster after acquisition of Anthony Sherman in a trade with the Cardinals.
Round 7, Pick 1 (207) Mike Catapano/DE/Princeton. Star Impact: ✪✪1⁄2
Ivy League standout who will adapt to new outside linebacker position after defensive end career that he played at 270 pounds. He will have to establish himself on special teams but has a mountain of potential. Informed that he’s “a little wild” by an NFL scout who scouted him.
UDFA Watch (O): Tyler Bray/QB/Tennessee. From early entry to undrafted. Big time arm.
UDFA Watch (D): Otha Foster/FS/West Alabama. Small school sleeper; great measureables.
