David Phelps and Freddy Garcia? You really think those guys are going to lead you to a division title? Ivan Nova has been slipping , Sabathia will always be good but he's hurt. The Yankees pitching is not good enough to hold up. Swishers' starting to fall. Tex is starting to fall. A-rod's been falling. I could see Derek Jeter dropping off soon too. The Yankees are staring to slip and the Rays are in the completely opposite direction.
What I said, was that Garcia and Phelps have filled in for the injured guys and haven't lost games yet. They've stepped up, and they have just enough in them to hold on until the big boys come back.
Nova's ERA per month: 5.18 in April, 5.87 in May, 1.26 in June, and 3.00 so far in the short July. He didn't have his best outing today, but before that has lowered his ERA in every start since May 30th. Sabathia hurt is still better than half the aces in baseball, and he's not hurt anymore - he'll be pitching Tuesday.
Mark Teixeira is the hottest he has ever been! He's hitting .313 so far in July, and ALREADY has exceeded his HR and RBI totals from the month before, and this month is only half over. He is hot and it's here to stay - he's a historically slow starter, but it's his time now.
I'll give you A-Rod, he sucks even though he did homer today. But he has sucked for 3 years now lol we're stuck with him :(
Swish is solid, and Jeter has really opened eyes this season and has not shown his age.
Joba Chamberlain pitched recently and he's on his way back. So is Brett Gardner. Reinforcements are coming, and guys like Cano (in the midst of an 18 game hitting streak) and Teix (having the best month of his season) are heating up at just the right time. Considering the Yankees have won 10 series and lost just 2 since June 1st, I don't think they've slowed down at all.
Show me how the Rays have been improving to the extent that the Yankees have.
The Rays haven't been improving but they are on the brink of it. Mental errors is all the that's been keeping the Rays from breaking out. Evan Longoria and Matt Joyce will bring more consistency to the line-up soon. Plus the Yankees would be in worse shape if they lost there two best players in there line-up. Imagine the Yankees losing Robie Cano and Derek Jeter for a lot of the season, the Yankees would be a bottom of the celler team. The Rays had there best line-up out there the whole month of April and as you saw, we had the best record. So the only thing to expect out there is that the Rays will be very good to end the season. I don't think Teixeria is hitting the best EVER.... .313 is good, but it's not typical Mark Teixeria. People thought Nova was super good because of June, but as we see his ERA already isn't good enough. He's a average 3-starter and him and C.C. are not enough to take on Price, Hellickson, a improving Matt Moore, and James Shields.
The Rays are digging themselves quite a hole. If they don't start improving the way you say they will soon, it may be too late, because the Yankees aren't slowing down. Even the broadcasters were saying that the Yankees can play .500 ball over the next like 2 weeks or so and still be in great shape. But they're way better than a .500 ballclub, which right now can't be said about the rest of the AL East because of the numbers they've put up.
The Yankees didn't lose Jeet or Robbie so I don't know why you're bringing that up. I'm sure they'd have trouble if they did, but they didn't. Instead they lost the best reliever in the history of baseball, but they've held up. Teix is the hottest he has been with the Yanks. .313 is way better than his career .280 average, and the power numbers are there as well.
The Yankees starting pitching is strong enough - that's probably the main reason why they're winning. Starters have given length and dominated since May. But even if you don't think they have enough, they only had 3 guys in 2009, and that was good enough to win it all.
I'm still waiting for proof or evidence of how the Rays have been improving, or are even showing signs of getting better. I think they'll be one of the wild cards, but honestly I see no team catching the Yankees for the division title.
The Rays can pitch and there bullpen is doing amazing, the only question is the hitting. If they get Longo back than they can start hitting like April, where they averaged 5 runs a game. I think your underestimating what the Rays can do. This team at one point had the best record in baseball in may. We were in first place early June, and they are capable of getting right back to where they were.
They did once have the best record, but the Yankees took off and haven't showed signs of looking back. Of course it is only July, so no lead is safe, but some of the improvements I've mentioned have already occurred. CC Sabathia was dominant as always in his first start off the DL on Tuesday. Hiroki Kuroda as well - yet another dominant start. He's proven he's a consistent #2 for the Yankees. Add him with Hughes and Nova, and that's a beyond solid starting 4.
I was looking at the standings, and I saw that the wild card race is INSANELY tight. I believe the Rays are good enough to win one of those, but I don't think anyone can catch the Yanks.
I have to agree with Virginia on this. As much as it pains me to say it as one of the biggest Yankee haters on the site (Red Sox fan, don't need much more explaining that that), unless the Yankees pull a 2011 Red Sox; nobody is catching them. I'm not saying that New York can't be beaten, because they certainly can. It just won't be done by any team in the AL East.
Haha coming from you that mean a lot Mike!
We'll see if any non-AL East team can beat them. I'm seeing the Yanks play the Rangers on my birthday...should be a fun matchup!
Humbaby these two would make a cute couple
Also, a little tip for Virginia, I listened to asommers, and then I started to listen to you, and the first thing you said was, "I agree with you." My tip for you is when you're in a debate, NEVER start your argument out by agreeing with the other person, no matter what the topic.
Ahh! I hope you listened on though! But I'll remember that for next time haha thanks.
