McGovern played right out of the gate as a true freshman for Penn State and started in nine games at right guard. He is a smart player that isn’t a plus athlete but he has excellent balance and effectively turns defenders away from plays. McGovern is a gamer who really sees the field, does a nice job of mirroring pass rushers and had a heads up fumble recovery in the Rose Bowl. He gets into position and lines up trap blocks well with his understanding of the play’s development and also fights well with excellent hand placement to go along with nice choppy feet. He is not overpowering by any means but he is very quick out of his stance and wins with leverage and speed on interior blocks. McGovern can anchor down but he can still be moved off his spot and needs to add more thickness to his frame to maximize his potential. He profiles as a starting level guard at the pro level with some development but his understanding of the game and potential in a zone blocking scheme, makes him a priority interior linemen.
