Baton Rouge, LA | 6006 | 270 | 4.78E | 2020

At first glance, you might wonder how this bowling ball of fury has posted such impressive production as a pass-rushing force. His build is a rare one, short, stout, heavy, agile, you don’t see players come in this mold very often. His hard-nosed style of play is contagious and motivates his fellow teammates. He committed to Texas without taking an official visit due to his desire to play for former Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong, who reminded him of his father, also a football coach. Coach Strong played him in the Fox end position, a hybrid defensive end/linebacker role that enabled him to make plays. It resulted in him accumulating 33 tackles, 23 quarterback pressures, eight for loss, three sacks and earned him Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year honors. Under new head coach Todd Herman and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando, he is being asked to switch to a more traditional defensive end type role. He’ll need to learn how to finish—he’s had opportunities to register a higher sack total with the amount of opportunities/hits he’s had on quarterbacks. While he’s proven that he can bully offensive tackles at the collegiate level, at 270-pounds, he could be destined to play middle linebacker at the next level—think a more athletic, versatile version of Jasper Brinkley.

2016: Played in 12 games and made five starts (Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Texas Tech, Kansas, TCU) … made 33 tackles (25 solo) … had 8.0 tackles for loss (T-8 UT freshman single season) … added 3.0 sacks.

High School: Coached by father Mike Roach at Madison Prep … four-time all-state selection … selected to participate in the 2016 Offense-Defense All-American Bowl … named first-team 2A All-State as a linebacker by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association and first-team composite by the Louisiana Football Coaches Association in 2015 … selected as the Baton Rouge Advocate All-Metro Outstanding Defensive Player, and Small School MVP … listed No. 35 in the New Orleans Times-Picayune Nifty 50 … rated No. 392 nationally (No. 28 SDE) and No. 28 overall in Texas by 247Sports … ranked No. 42 WDE nationally and No. 34 overall in Texas by Rivals … rated No. 77 DE nationally and No. 41 overall in Texas by ESPN … recorded 143 tackles, 14.5 sacks, 12  additional tackles for loss, two interceptions, five forced fumbles, five pass breakups, 20 hurries and two blocked punts as a senior … attended Southern University Labratory High School as a freshman … named honorable mention 1A All-State as an offensive lineman by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association … also competed in shot put and discus in high school.

Personal: Son of Nancy and Mike Roach … has one brother, Mike Jr. … father was an All-American linebacker at Southern University … brother was an All-Conference safety at Grambling State … volunteers his time with the Boy Scouts in Baton Rouge when home … was born in Baton Rouge … can sing and play the piano … studying youth and community studies.
