2020 NFL Draft Team Needs: Dallas Cowboys (8-8)

By Dakota Follett (@dakfollett) | Published April 19, 2020

What the Cowboys will do with the 17th overall pick is one of the draft’s big mysteries. Will they flip the pick as part of a deal for Jamal Adams or will they stand pat and look to add an edge rusher or safety? They’ll also need to replace the departed Byron Jones (Dolphins). Be sure to download your copy of the 2020 NFL Draft Bible, featuring 600+ scouting reports.

QUARTERBACK: Dak Prescott/Cooper Rush/Clayton Thorson

Money Invested: $31.497M | Percentage of Cap: 15.9% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: Dak Prescott will play on the franchise tag next season and it’s only a matter of time before he gets the long-term extension he’s looking for.

RUNNING BACK: Ezekiel Elliott | Depth: Tony Pollard/Jordan Chunn

Money Invested: $12.352M | Percentage of Cap: 6.2% | Need Level: NONE

Overview: This is Zeke’s job for years to come.

FULLBACK: Jamize Olawale

Money Invested: $1.700M | Percentage of Cap: 0.9% | Need Level: LOW

WIDE RECEIVER: Amari Cooper/Michael Gallup/Cedrick Wilson | Depth: Ventell Bryant/Devin Smith/Noah Brown/Tevin Jones/Jon’Vea Johnson/Lance Lenoir/Deante Burton

Money Invested: $18.706M | Percentage of Cap: 9.4% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: Amari Cooper resigned long-term and Michael Gallup took a massive step forward last season as a threat on the perimeter. However, in today’s passing league you need at least three viable pass catchers on the outside in order to stay consistent and effective.

TIGHT END: Blake Jarwin/Dalton Schultz | Depth: Blake Bell/Cole Hikutini

Money Invested: $6.488M | Percentage of Cap: 3.3% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: The Cowboys resigned Blake Jarwin and picked up Blake Bell here but the possibility of adding a true difference-maker here has to entice them.

OFFENSIVE TACKLE: Tyron Smith/La’el Collins | Depth: Mitch Hyatt/Wyatt Miller

Money Invested: $19.780M | Percentage of Cap: 10% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: This tandem of bookends is one of the league’s best at solidifying the edge.

OFFENSIVE GUARD: Connor Williams/Zack Martin | Depth: Brandon Knight/Cody Wichmann

Money Invested: $17.924M | Percentage of Cap: 9% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: Both starting guards return to help protect Dak Prescott and pave running lanes for Ezekiel Elliott.

CENTER: Joe Looney | Depth: Connor McGovern/Adam Redmond/Marcus Henry

Money Invested: $3.500M | Percentage of Cap: 1.8% | Need Level: MEDIUM

Overview: The Cowboys seem comfortable handing the keys to the position over to Joe Looney after the retirement of Travis Frederick. They also added Connor McGovern early on in the draft last year to eventually slide in here.

DEFENSIVE LINE: Gerald McCoy/Dontari Poe | Depth: Antwaun Woods/Trysten Hill/Justin Hamilton

Money Invested: $12.457M | Percentage of Cap: 6.3% | Need Level: MEDIUM

Overview: Dallas picked up proven veterans in Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe. However, both are aging and finding another young option to rotate in wouldn’t be a bad idea.

EDGE RUSHER: DeMarcus Lawrence/Tyrone Crawford | Depth: Aldon Smith/Randy Gregory/Dorance Armstrong/Joe Jackson/Jalen Jelks

Money Invested: $35.294M | Percentage of Cap: 17.8% | Need Level: MEDIUM/HIGH

Overview: This is listed as a major need up top because there’s a ton of uncertainty here. Can Aldon Smith be even half the player he was five years ago? Will Randy Gregory make it back this year? Can Dorance Armstrong step up into a bigger role?

LINEBACKER: Leighton Vander Esch/Jaylon Smith/Sean Lee | Depth: Joe Thomas/Justin March/Luke Gifford/Chris Covington

Money Invested: $18.817M | Percentage of Cap: 9.5% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: The Cowboys have their elite linebacker duo in Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith. Sean Lee was resigned to add depth and contribute in base packages.

CORNERBACK: Chidobe Awuzie/Anthony Brown/Jourdan Lewis | Depth: Maurice Canady/Chris Westry/CJ Goodwin/DJ White

Money Invested: $10.510M | Percentage of Cap: 5.3% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: Dallas lost star cornerback Byron Jones here this offseason, so you better believe they’re looking for their next top corner in the draft.

SAFETY: HaHa Clinton-Dix/Xavier Woods | Depth: Darian Thompson/Donovan Wilson

Money Invested: $7.830M | Percentage of Cap: 4% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: HaHa Clinton-Dix was added to fill the gap left by the departure of Jeff Heath to the Raiders but he’s likely viewed as a short-term option to stop the bleeding. They could look to fix this issue long-term by finding their guy in the draft.

KICKER: Greg Zuerlein | Depth: Kai Forbath/Tristan Vizcaino

Money Invested: $3.331M | Percentage of Cap: 1.7% | Need Level: NONE

Overview: Greg Zuerlein was picked up in free agency to take over for Brett Maher and the instability he provided last season. Could be a competition here but I can’t see a scenario where Zuerlein loses it.

PUNTER: Chris Jones | Money Invested: $2.400M | Percentage of Cap: 1.2% | Need Level: NONE

LONG SNAPPER: LP Ladouceur | Money Invested: $0.888M | Percentage of Cap: 0.4% | Need Level: LOW
