2020 NFL Draft Team Needs Houston Texans (10-6)

By Dakota Follett (@dakfollett) | Published April 10, 2020

The Houston organization continues to function without a ‘true GM,’ as head coach Bill O’Brien has been handed full control over the roster. While O’Brien has taken his fair share of criticism, he has also won the AFC Scouth four times in the past six seasons, including 22 wins over the past two seasons. With plenty of roster shakeups abound, 2020 appears to be his most difficult challenge yet! Be sure to download your copy of the 2020 NFL Draft Bible, featuring 600+ scouting reports.

QUARTERBACK: Deshaun Watson/AJ McCarron/Alex McGough

Money Invested: $9.083M | Percentage of Cap: 4.6% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: Deshaun Watson is the Texans’ unquestioned franchise quarterback of the future.

RUNNING BACK: David Johnson/Duke Johnson | Depth: Buddy Howell/Karan Higdon

Money Invested: $16.616M | Percentage of Cap: 8.4% | Need Level: MEDIUM

Overview: David Johnson was brought in from Arizona at quite a hefty asking price but his play has been declining for a couple years now. If he has another disappointing year, the Texans move on pretty quickly.

FULLBACK: Cullen Gillaspia

Money Invested: $0.701M | Percentage of Cap: 0.4% | Need Level: MEDIUM

WIDE RECEIVER: Will Fuller V/Kenny Stills/Randall Cobb | Depth: Brandin Cooks/Keke Coutee/Deandre Carter/Steven Mitchell Jr./Isaac Whitney/Chad Hansen

Money Invested: $34.978M | Percentage of Cap: 13.6% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: The Texans did bring in Randall Cobb via free agency and Brandin Cooks via trade, as they attempt to aid the loss of Deandre Hopkins (Cardinals) with a committee approach. However, there’s till no true No.1 wide out on the roster.

TIGHT END: Darren Fells/Jordan Akins | Depth: Jordan Thomas/Kahale Warring

Money Invested: $6.101M | Percentage of Cap: 3.1% | Need Level: MEDIUM/HIGH

Overview: Darren Fells was re-signed after having a solid year contributing in the red zone and as a safety blanket underneath for Deshaun Watson. However, he is getting old and they might want to find someone more dynamic in the pass game.

OFFENSIVE TACKLE: Laremy Tunsil/Tytus Howard | Depth: Elijah Nkansah/Brent Qvale/Roderick Johnson/Kyle Murphy/Rick Leonard

Money Invested: $16.849M | Percentage of Cap: 8.5% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: The Texans drafted Tytus Howard in the first-round last year and traded for Laremy Tunsil mid-season to grab their bookends for the future.

OFFENSIVE GUARD: Senio Kelemete/Zach Fulton | Depth: Max Scharping/David Steinmetz

Money Invested: $12.356M | Percentage of Cap: 6.2% | Need Level: MEDIUM

Overview: This guard tandem proved to be serviceable for the Texans last season.

CENTER: Nick Martin | Depth: Greg Mancz

Money Invested: $10.891M | Percentage of Cap: 5.5% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: Nick Martin had a great year last season in leading this Texans offensive line and Greg Mancz behind him is a great interior depth piece.

DEFENSIVE LINE: JJ Watt/Brandon Dunn/Tim Jernigan | Depth: Charles Omenihu/Carlos Watkins/Angelo Blackson/Eddie Vanderdoes/Ira Savage-Lewis

Money Invested: $29.898M | Percentage of Cap: 15.1% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: Tim Jernigan was brought in through free agency but will he be enough to plug the holes across this defensive line?

EDGE RUSHER: Whitney Mercilus/Brennan Scarlett | Depth: Jacob Martin/Chris Landrum/Duke Ejiofor/Davin Bellamy

Money Invested: $16.909M | Percentage of Cap: 8.5% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: Jadeveon Clowney was traded away last season and the Texans still have yet to replace his production off the edge.

LINEBACKER: Benardrick McKinney/Zach Cunningham | Depth: Dylan Cole/Tyrell Adams/Peter Kalambayi/Nate Hall

Money Invested: $13.162M | Percentage of Cap: 6.6% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: This duo has been solid in the middle of that Texans’ defense and Dylan Cole provides some valuable depth as a rotational piece.

CORNERBACK: Bradley Roby/Gareon Conley/Vernon Hargreaves | Depth: Lonnie Johnson Jr./Phillip Gaines/Cornell Armstrong/Keion Crossen/Anthony Chesley

Money Invested: $16.695M | Percentage of Cap: 8.4% | Need Level: MEDIUM

Overview: Bradley Roby was signed last offseason and the Texans traded for Gareon Conley mid-season to try and give them some help on the outside. Still not sure if this is the tandem of the future for the Texans but they should have a backup plan ready.

SAFETY: Justin Reid/Tashaun Gipson Sr. | Depth: Eric Murray/Jaylen Watkins/Shalom Luani/AJ Moore/Jonathan Owens

Money Invested: $16.574M | Percentage of Cap: 8.4% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: Justin Reid is a young stud and Tashaun Gipson played well after being brought over last offseason. They even added depth here with the signing of Eric Murray.

KICKER: Ka’imi Fairbairn

Money Invested: $4.750M | Percentage of Cap: 2.4% | Need Level: NONE

PUNTER: Bryan Anger | Money Invested: $2.417M | Percentage of Cap: 1.2% | Need Level: NONE

LONG SNAPPER: Jon Weeks | Money Invested: $0.888M | Percentage of Cap: 0.4% | Need Level: LOW
