2020 NFL Draft Team Needs: Minnesota Vikings (10-6)

By Dakota Follett (@dakfollett) | Published April 5, 2020

Minnesota made their way back into the playoff mix, which resulted in a contract extension for game-managing quarterback Kirk Cousins. The Vikings have glaring needs at wide receiver and cornerback after dealing off Stefon Diggs and Trae Waynes, along with the release of Xavier Rhodes. QUARTERBACK: Kirk Cousins/Sean Mannion/Jake Browning

Money Invested: $22.498M | Percentage of Cap: 11.4% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: Cousins stepped up his play last season and has a tight hold on his job at least through next season.

RUNNING BACK: Dalvin Cook/Alexander Mattison/Mike Boone/Ameer Abdullah/Tony Brooks-James

Money Invested: $5.217M | Percentage of Cap: 2.6% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: The Vikings only hold control of Cook through next season but did draft Mattison last year and hold him through 2023.

Money Invested: $1.75M | Percentage of Cap: 0.9% | Need Level: LOW

WIDE RECEIVER: Adam Thielen/Tajae Sharpe/Olabisi Johnson | Depth: Chad Beebe/Davion Davis/Alexander Hollins/Bralon Addison/Dillon Mitchell

Money Invested: $17.784M | Percentage of Cap: 9% | Need Level: URGENT

Overview: The Vikings clearly need to add higher-tier more options here after dealing away the disgruntled Stefon Diggs.

TIGHT END: Kyle Rudolph/Irv Smith/Tyler Conklin/Brandon Dillon

Money Invested: $11.573M | Percentage of Cap: 5.8% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: Rudolph is as reliable a leader as they come and Smith was drafted last year to compliment him in the pass game.

OFFENSIVE TACKLE: Riley Reiff/Brian O’Neill | Depth: Rashod Hill/Oli Udoh/Aviante Collins

Money Invested: $16.757M | Percentage of Cap: 8.5% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: Reiff has provided stability on the left side but the right tackle spot will need to be addressed sooner rather than later.

OFFENSIVE GUARD: Pat Elflein/Dakota Dozier | Depth: Dru Samia

Money Invested: $4.24M | Percentage of Cap: 2.1% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: The Vikings replaced Josh Kline with the signing of Dakota Dozier, but I think a better upgrade could be found.

CENTER: Garrett Bradbury | Depth: Brett Jones

Money Invested: $3.768M | Percentage of Cap: 1.9% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: Bradbury played well after being selected in the first round last year and is under contract for at least another three seasons.

DEFENSIVE LINE: Michael Pierce/Shamar Stephen | Depth: Jaleel Johnson/Armon Watts/Jalyn Holmes

Money Invested: $12.778M | Percentage of Cap: 6.4% | Need Level: MEDIUM

Overview: Pierce was signed to replace the released Linval Joseph, along with Shamar Stephen, as they hope to shore up that leaky Vikings’ run defense. Depth pieces and interior pass rush help could be added here.

EDGE RUSH: Danielle Hunter/Ifeadi Odenigbo | Depth: Anthony Zettel/Eddie Yarbrough/Stacy Keely

Money Invested: $11.513M | Percentage of Cap: 5.8% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: Adding a higher-level pass rushing option opposite Danielle Hunter will be key for the Vikings in replacing Everson Griffen.

LINEBACKER: Anthony Barr/Eric Kendricks/Eric Wilson | Depth: Ben Gedeon/Cameron Smith/Hercules Mata’afa/DeMarquis Gates

Money Invested: $28.993M | Percentage of Cap: 14.6% | Need Level: MEDIUM

Overview: Barr and Kendricks are solid options under team control for two and thee more years, respectively. However, the Vikings could use an upgrade at that weak linebacker spot in base packages.

CORNERBACK: Mike Hughes/Kris Boyd/Holton Hill | Depth: Nate Meadors/Kemon Hall/Marcus Sayles

Money Invested: $6.589M | Percentage of Cap: 3.3% | Need Level: URGENT

Overview: Xavier Rhodes was released and Trae Waynes was traded away, paving the way for Mike Hughes to step into a starting role. They still need to find a corner to man the other side.

SAFETY: Harrison Smith/Anthony Harris | Depth: None

Money Invested: $22.191M | Percentage of Cap: 11.2% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: This tandem proved to be one of the league’s best last season but Harris will be playing under the tag next season and there is no depth behind these two.

KICKER: Dan Bailey | Money Invested: $2.15M | Percentage of Cap: 1.1% | Need Level: MEDIUM

PUNTER: Britton Colquitt | Money Invested: $1.817M | Percentage of Cap: 0.9% | Need Level: LOW

LONG SNAPPER: Austin Cutting | Money Invested: $0.694M | Percentage of Cap: 0.4% | Need Level: MEDIUM
