2020 NFL Draft Team Needs: San Francisco 49ers (13-3)

By Dakota Follett (@dakfollett) | Published April 16, 2020

Falling just a few plays short of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, the young leadership duo of John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have positioned the 49ers for another title run. The team flirted with the idea of signing Tom Brady during the offseason but opted to stick with his former backup Jimmy Garropolo instead. The big need here should be adding a playmaker wide receiver to inject into the mix. Be sure to download your copy of the 2020 NFL Draft Bible, featuring 600+ scouting reports.

QUARTERBACK: Jimmy Garoppolo/Nick Mullens/CJ Beathard

Money Invested: $28.473M | Percentage of Cap: 14.4% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: The 49ers have made it clear that Jimmy Garoppolo is their guy moving forward.

RUNNING BACK: Raheem Mostert/Tevin Coleman | Depth: Matt Breida/Jerick McKinnon/Jeff Wilson

Money Invested: $14.946M | Percentage of Cap: 7.5% | Need Level: NONE

Overview: This is truly a committee in San Francisco’s backfield, one that is already full of bodies.

FULLBACK: Kyle Juszczyk

Money Invested: $6.700M | Percentage of Cap: 3.4% | Need Level: NONE

WIDE RECEIVER: Deebo Samuel/Kendrick Bourne/Trent Taylor | Depth: Marquise Goodwin/Dante Pettis/Jalen Hurd/Richie James Jr./Travis Benjamin/Shawn Poindexter/Chris Thompson

Money Invested: $15.564M | Percentage of Cap: 7.9% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: This group is incredibly deep but who knows if the 49ers are totally content with it. They may look to add a difference maker in the first-round to replace the production of Emmanuel Sanders.

TIGHT END: George Kittle | Depth: Ross Dwelley/Daniel Helm

Money Invested: $3.633M | Percentage of Cap: 1.8% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: George Kittle is a superstar and Ross Dwelley has contributed well in his backup role.

OFFENSIVE TACKLE: Joe Staley/Mike McGlinchey | Depth: Justin Skule/Shon Coleman/Leonard Webster/Jaryd Jones-Smith

Money Invested: $19.603M | Percentage of Cap: 9.9% | Need Level: MEDIUM

Overview: Joe Staley is aging but has stayed very productive on the blindside. The 49ers could look to add here later on in the draft to groom his successor.

OFFENSIVE GUARD: Laken Tomlinson/Daniel Brunskill | Depth: Tom Compton/Ross Reynolds

Money Invested: $9.745M | Percentage of Cap: 4.9% | Need Level: MEDIUM/HIGH

Overview: If there are upgrades to be had on this offensive line, it’s obviously at the two guard spots. However, these two played a pivotal role in the 49ers’ rushing attack last season and will likely be the starters come week one.

CENTER: Weston Richburg | Depth: Ben Garland/Jake Brendel/Kofi Amichia

Money Invested: $7.825M | Percentage of Cap: 3.9% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: Weston Richburg has played well at the center spot in San Francisco and remains relatively cheap. Don’t expect the 49ers to move on from him any time soon.

DEFENSIVE LINE: Arik Armstead/Solomon Thomas | Depth: Kentavius Street/DJ Jones/Willie Henry/Jullian Taylor/Kevin Givens/Ray Smith

Money Invested: $19.668M | Percentage of Cap: 9.9% | Need Level: HIGH

Overview: The 49ers traded away DeForest Buckner to the Colts for pick No.13 and will most certainly look to replace him early on in the draft.

EDGE RUSHER: Nick Bosa/Dee Ford | Depth: Kerry Hyder/Ronald Blair III/Jonathan Kongbo/Alex Barrett

Money Invested: $27.259M | Percentage of Cap: 13.8% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: Nick Bosa and Dee Ford are both elite coming off the edges and they added Kerry Hyder to provide some depth here.

LINEBACKER: Dre Greenlaw/Fred Warner/Kwon Alexander | Depth: Mark Nzeocha/Joe Walker/Joey Alfieri/Azeez Al-Shaair

Money Invested: $10.115M | Percentage of Cap: 5.1% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: This is a young and very promising group for the 49ers. Look for them to add only late round picks or undrafted free agents to round out this unit.

CORNERBACK: Richard Sherman/Emmanuel Moseley/K’Waun Williams | Depth: Ahkello Witherspoon/DJ Reed Jr./Chris Edwards/Tim Harris/Jalen Tabor/Jermaine Kelly

Money Invested: $24.671M | Percentage of Cap: 12.4% | Need Level: MEDIUM

Overview: Emmanuel Moseley had a nice year last season and the 49ers will look to give him a more prominent role on the outside. They could use an upgrade at the nickel corner slot.

SAFETY: Jaquiski Tartt/Jimmie Ward | Depth: Marcell Harris/Tarvarius Moore/Derrick Kindred/Jacob Thieneman/Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles

Money Invested: $14.589M | Percentage of Cap: 7.4% | Need Level: LOW

Overview: Jimmie Ward was brought back to team up once again with Jaquiski Tartt on the backend. Both of these two played crucial roles for the 49ers’ defense but more valuable depth could be added behind them.

KICKER: Robbie Gould | Money Invested: $5.100M | Percentage of Cap: 2.6% | Need Level: LOW

PUNTER: Mitch Wishnowsky | Money Invested: $0.866M | Percentage of Cap: 0.4% | Need Level: LOW
