Scouting Portfolio: Dave Calderon, Kutztown/New Haven

DE/OB | Kutztown/New Haven | 5-11 | 260 | Vert: 36″ | Broad: 10-4 | Shuttle 4.34 | 10-Yard: 1.30 | Willingboro, NJ | Neptune HS

Overview: A high effort player who possesses a stout build/frame along the edge at the defensive end position, Calderon is relentless in pursuit. He exhibits the quickness to close in on ball-carriers against the run, while demonstrating the ability to close on the quarterback when rushing the passer. Calderon also shows excellent lateral foot quickness and great overall power in both the run and pass game. He properly works down the line of scrimmage on plays away from him. Aside from overall lack of length, Calderon will need to work on his initial explosiveness off the ball. He projects as a defensive end at the next level and with his high motor, he can be an immediate contributor special teams.

Career: Voted to the All-PSAC East Second Team in 2018. Started all 11 games for New Haven in 2015, accumulated 48 total tackles (seven and a half tackles for loss), three sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Finished New Haven career with ten sacks.

Background: Son of Wayne Calderon and Latricia Smith, as two brothers, Wayne Jr. and Justice, and four sisters, Horizon, Trinity, Courtney and Princess. Transferred from New Haven to Kutztown when he became a father in order to be closer to family. Team captain as a senior at Neptune high school; two-time First Team All-Division and Third Team All-Shore. Had 90 solo tackles and 10 sacks and a senior, playing both linebacker and defensive end. Accumulated 120 tackles, 12 sacks, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries as a junior defensive end. Member of National Honor Society and Class Council.
