Scouting Portfolio: DJ Stewart, Defensive Back

NORVEL ‘DJ’ STEWART | Rhode Island | DB | 6014 | 210 | 4.62 | Hartford, CT | Bloomfield HS | Class of 2019

Overview: A team captain and stalwart at Rhode Island, Stewart is quick to make his presence made on the field with a physical style of play. However, he has bulked up an added an additional 10 pounds top his frame and could be best suited at linebacker. Stewart owns excellent length, understands how to shed/disengage blocks and plays the run very well, especially on the perimeter. He appears to be very comfortable in the box, pursuing the ball carrier and playing at the line of scrimmage. He has been training in Connecticut with former UConn Huskies/New York Giants running back Andre Dixon and trainer Antwan Harris in preparation of his next opportunity. Stewart will participate at the National Scouting Combine in Indianapolis (February) and Rhode Island pro day (March), where he’s expected to showcase his improved athleticism and speed; expected to run in the 4.60-range.

Career: Finished career with 224 total tackles in three seasons on defense. Started eight games in 2018, made 54 tackles (two tackles for loss), two forced fumbles, one recovery, one sack and one pass breakup. Started 11 games in 2017, making 79 tackles, (one and a half tackles for loss), and five pass breakups. Started 11 games as sophomore, led the team with 86 tackles and had two interceptions. As a freshman, he played wide receiver (started four games) and special teams.

High School: During his time at Bloomfield, he was a two-time Class S Division All-State selection. He was a two-way star for Bloomfield, rushing for 2,487 yards, passing for 1,930 and totaling 910 receiving yards on offense, tallying 20 touchdowns his senior year. As a defensive back, he had 20 career interceptions. Had four starts at wide receiver as a freshman and also played special teams.

Personal: Lost five of his closest friends growing up, whose jersey numbers he has tattooed on his body. Graduated in 2019; majored in Communications Studies.
